BRIEF: Student residents flee smoke at Eccles dorm

Residents of Eccles C student housing found themselves on the street Monday evening as firefighters searched for the source of black smoke.

Cedar City Fire Chief Paul Irons said a rubber coupler on an electrical motor in a mechanical room was the cause of the dark smoke.

"Lots of smoke but no fire," he said. "We didn't use any water."

Irons said the incident was controlled in about 15 minutes.

Although there was no exhaustive evacuation, Irons said students who did leave were able to return shortly.
