Craigo’s Pizza will help SUU graphic design students by fundraising an activity on March 11, which will help students travel to a seminar in California later this month.

Jeffrey Hanson, assistant professor of graphic design, said the fundraising activity at Craigo’s will assist the department in sending 24 students to the American Institute of Graphic Arts Y-Conference in San Diego.

The students will be in San Diego from March 24 through March 27 attending several museums and studios, as well as the conference.

He said money from the fundraiser will go to the students’ $9,000 hotel and travel expenses. They have received enough to put them within $500 of their goal.

He said the graphic design students have already hosted 10 fundraisers with various businesses to get them the necessary funds to attend the conference.

According to the AIGA’s press release, the focus of the conference is helping professionals and students in the discipline of graphic design to change in response to the changing market.

“Our industry is experiencing a cross-disciplinary shift that will forever change the way we work,” Angela Hill, co-chair of the Y-Conference, said in the press release. “The focus of the 2010 event is how design professionals can adapt and respond to this new set of rules and what it means for the future.”

Hanson said the opportunity is ideal for students, allowing them to network and learn about design firms that are leading the industry.

“SUU students have a strong connection with our community here in Cedar,” Hanson said. “We have seen an abundance of generosity for our students to work towards this goal.”
Eli Steed, manager of Craigo’s, said Craigo’s will be helping by hosting the Modern Warfare 2 tournament using eight PS3s and televisions.

The competition fee is $5, which includes a slice of pizza and “all the gaming you can fit in the night.” The event will be from 7 p.m. through 1 a.m.

There will be a pizza prize for the tournament winner.

Mitch Stephenson, a sophomore engineering major from Cedar City, said of the several pizza places he has worked at, Craigo’s has been the best.

He said their ingredients are the best he has worked with. Other places he has worked at take their sauces from a can and maybe add a few spices. At Craigo’s they make their sauces and dressing “in house.”

“The honey mustard is great,” Steed said. “I don’t even like salads, but I have one a day because of the dressing.”

Stephenson said the spacious work conditions allow for speed, better quality and a “great place to hang out.”

He said there is a room just for people to go and relax, and anyone with permission from Steed can play a Playstation 3 in the room.

Steed said the company has had trouble drawing in the college crowd, but said he hopes some of the activities Craigo’s is setting up will attract more students.

While the original Craigo’s was begun in Rexburg Idaho by Craig Roundy in 1994, Roundy sold the business and the new owner changed the name to Craigo’s Gourmet Pizza Company to avoid paying to purchase the original name.

Steed said in 2001 the son-in-law of Craig Roundy, Jared Jeffs, began the Craigo’s Pizza franchise. Steed said the company was sued by another Craigo’s out of Texas for using the Craigo name. They withdrew when they learned that their own company was started ten years after the original Craigo’s Pizza in Rexburg.

Steed said that he does not want to put down other pizza businesses in town, but said “we are just different” and said discounts and coupons are available through the Craigo’s Facebook page.

Craigo’s is located at 2313 West Highway 56.
