The Outdoor Center sold items for students to purchase at the SUU yard sale in the Starlight Room on Tuesday. The money made went towards new equiment for the Outdoor Center.

Because of SUU policy, off-campus vendors who originally planned to sell their products in the annual Outdoor Center’s garage sale Tuesday could not do so.

Coordinator of Outdoor Recreation & Education Rob Myers said he did not know until the day of the sale that the policy did not allow off-campus vendors to participate unless the sale was also off-campus.

Myers said he hopes to have another sale in the spring semester at an off-campus location so those vendors will have an opportunity to sell their merchandise.

The garage sale took place Tuesday from noon to 5 p.m. in the Starlight Room.

Myers said the money from the sale will go toward inventory when the Outdoor Center orders newer and better equipment. The stuff that was not sold will remain on sale for people to come buy.

Despite the absence of the other vendors, gNar Clothing, a campus based company, sold T-shirts at the event.

However, Rachel Hansen, a senior finance major from Salt Lake City, who was at the table selling the T-shirts said it was a disappointment that only one shirt had been sold by 3 p.m., even though the sale started at noon.

“It’s been a lot slower than other years,” Hansen said.

The Outdoor Center had things from tents, to crash pads, climbing shoes and helmets, snowboards and more for sale.

“I’m not disappointed … (It was) a fun event,” Myers said.

He said before the sale, one-third of the equipment, including 30 pairs of shoes, was sold because people knew the sale was happening and wanted first come first serve.

Myers said the prices of the equipment sold were good deals. There was a snowboard for $50, snowboarding shoes for $10 and canyoneering shoes for $5.

He said climbing equipment was the most popular type of item at the sale.

Nick Watkins, a sophomore engineering major from Monroe, came to the sale because he was told about it in his Outdoor Recreation class and because he could get cheap gear.

Watkins said he was interested in looking at cross country skis and canyoneering stuff.

Myers said the sale was also done in conjunction with the movie shown in the Great Hall, Warren Miller’s Dynasty that began at 7 p.m. and cost $15.

He said the Outdoor Center continued the sale of equipment at the movie event.
Myers said Warren Miller is famous for promoting a lot of skiing and snowboarding in filmmaking.

Myers said it was a great “world gathering,” and a way to connect with friends.
