Students can eat free food, watch a comedian, support SUU sports, dance and more this week at spring semester’s Welcome Week activities.
Sponsored by SUUSA are a variety of activities to involve students the first week back of school.
Amy Shupe, SUUSA activities vice president, said she couldn’t pick a favorite event out of the week’s lineup.
“I’m just excited for all of it,” Shupe said. “I think it’ll be great to have events hosted at different venues (on campus).”
Today the Service & Learning Center will sponsor Bread and Soup Nite from 5 to 7 p.m. in the Sharwan Smith Center ballroom. The band Goodbye Nova and the a capella group Ringtones will perform.
Tuesday will be a blood drive. The first 600 students in the Rotunda from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Wednesday will receive free tacos.
At 8 p.m. Wednesday, comedian Sabrina Jalees will be in the Auditorium. The show is free for students with their student I.D. card.
Shupe said while Welcome Weeks have had comedians in the past, this is the first time there will be a female comedian.
“We have had comedians, but we wanted to do it a little different this time,” she said.
In a change from last semester’s Welcome Week where there was only standing room available to see the comedian, Shupe said the Auditorium where Jalees will be has more room and provides theatre-style seating.
“It will bring a whole new atmosphere to the show,” she said. “And with the different seating, you can see her even from the back.”
There will be a Club Fair at 5:30 p.m. Thursday in front of the Bookstore. Students can support the men’s basketball team as they take on North Dakota at 7 p.m. in the Centrum Arena. The first 400 students in the new student section, which is J and I, will receive a free Thorcorp sweatband.
The women’s red and white gymnastics meet is 7 p.m. Friday in the Centrum Arena.
Shupe said she hopes the sports will bring increased student support.
“We are trying to encourage involvement with the sports with the basketball game and gymnastics meet,” Shupe said.
Welcome Week wraps up with an ’80s dance in the Ballroom.
“I think the dance will definitely be fun,” Shupe said. “It’ll apply to a whole different group of students since it’s ’80s themed.”
