SUU records personal bests, conference qualifying times

With the team splitting for three different meets in California this weekend, seven athletes posted conference-qualifying times, while nine athletes recorded personal bests.

The T-Birds split between the Stanford Invitational, the San Francisco Distance Carnival and the Pomona-Pitzer Invitational and had athletes shine at all three meets.

At the Stanford Invitational, the duo of Nate Jewkes and Hayden Hawks broke the 29-minute barrier in the 10,000-meter run, qualifying them both for conference and setting new personal-bests.

Jewkes raced to a time of 28:46.80, placing him second in the SUU record books behind Cam Levins, while Hawks raced to a time of 28:53.12, putting him third in the record books on the event.

SUU’s Jasmyn Hildebrandt also qualified for the conference championships in the 10,000-meter run with a time of 36:51.23 at the San Francisco Distance Carnival. Hildebrandt’s time shatters her old personal best by about a minute and places her fifth in the Big Sky.

Alongside Hildebrandt, freshmen Ashley Tyndall and Angie Nickerson set records at SUU by being the first freshmen to break the 18-minute barrier in the 5,000-meter run. Tyndall clocked a time of 17:51.56, while Nickerson followed closely behind with a time of 17:56.61.

Back at Stanford, sprinter Mayra Franco notched a qualifying-mark in the 100-meter dash, recording a time of 11.99 seconds.

Distance runner Mike Tate qualified for the conference championships in another event, this time in 1,500-meter run with a personal best of 3:46.80.

Both distance runners Matt Wright and Liam Kennel competed in the 5,000-meter run for the first time and both recorded personal bests in their debuts with times of 14:33.84 and 14:39.61, respectively.

Over at the Pomona-Pitzer Invitational, jumper Alex Anderson took third in the long jump after recording a mark of 6.86 meters.

In the 3,000-meter steeplechase, Sklyar Riggs and Collin Arave took third and sixth, respectively. Riggs clocked in at 9:34.42, while Arave recorded a time of 9:53.82.

Distance runner Charlie Dimick also posted a personal best in the 1,500-meter run with a time of 4:46.05 with Kaylee Boyer-Abel finishing behind Dimick with a time of 4:58.77.

Next up for SUU is the Mt. Sac Relays and the Bryan Clay Invite in two weeks. Both meets are set to start on April 16.
