Resident, lawyer seek law change

Cedar City resident Julie Munn and her attorney Reed Braithwaite approached the Cedar City Council Wednesday about changing the Cedar City ordinance 34-8, dealing with disqualifying the status of taxi cab drivers.

Munn, who sought a taxi driver permit, was disqualified because she had a misdemeanor drug conviction two years ago.

Currently, the ordinance disqualifies applicants who have misdemeanors and felonies within the past five years from obtaining a taxi driving permit.

Braithwaite proposed a change to disqualify applicants who have been convicted of any felonious criminal offense involving theft, robbery, burglary, assualt, sex crimes, drugs, prostititution and driving under the influence within the past five years. This would exclude any misdemeanor conviction except for driving under the influence.

The council will vote on changing the ordinance Wednesday at 5:30 p.m. at the Cedar City Office Building, 10 N. Main St.
