Fire Marshall Mike Phillips and Cedar City Fire Chief Paul Irons approached the Cedar City Council Wednesday about implementing the Opticom Preemption system, which allows emergency service vehicles to safely control traffic signals.

Phillips and Irons said they would like to install the system to nine traffic signals throughout the city.

City Councilor Georgia Beth Thompson said she thought it was a good idea to have a cooperative agreement between the Utah Department of Transportation and the Cedar City Corporation to complete the city Opticom Preemption system.

“Let’s do it,” she said.

The council will vote on the matter Wednesday.
