The Frontier Homestead State Park Museum in Cedar City is currently looking for volunteers to participate in the Living History Village and other interactive programs that illustrate frontier life skills.

Some of the activities volunteers would be involved with include visitor services, interpretation and helping curators, but the work varies for each volunteer, said Todd Prince, Frontier Homestead State Park Museum manager.

Different opportunities offered in the past include giving tours, helping with the grounds work, and reading to children. Students involved have also participated in maintenance work and putting together educational kits for children.

Volunteers for the museum are often able to receive college credit, Prince said. The SUU History Department offers an opportunity to receive credit through volunteer work. The Outdoor Parks and Recreation program also allows students to work as interns in the museum, he said.

Some of the perks offered to volunteers are: area history tours, invitations to special events, and a 20-percent discount in the museum gift shop. It is also a unique way to build a resume, according to the press release.

There are both short-term and long-term opportunities to serve and any help is appreciated, seasonal employee Nannette Klein, said.

“It’s been an awesome experience to see the progress of the museum,” she said. “I’ve loved everything, especially working with the kids who come in.”

For more information regarding this opportunity, contact Todd Prince at (435) 586-9290. The museum’s hours are from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Saturday, and all volunteer services would be during regular hours. The museum is located at 635 N. Main Street.
