Time after time, SUU receives accolades and accomplishments that set us apart from many other colleges and universities in the region and country.

From academic programs to research projects and civic engagement to athletics, SUU outshines numerous other institutions.

We’ve been named a “Best in the West” school by the Princeton Review, “Top Ten in the Nation” by Consumers Digest, 31 of 33 nursing students passed the national certification test on the first try and our pre-med students have maintained a high percentage of acceptance to medical school, 96 percent last year.

In addition to receiving honors, SUU is often a leader, becoming the first institution to do a number of things.

We were the first university to sign an educational compact with a national park, opening up many opportunities for SUU students.

One particular area of campus that continually receives praise and breaks new ground is our Performing & Visual Arts College.

At the faculty Dance Concert, SUU became the first university to perform “Imago,” choreographed by the world-renown Alwin Nikolais.

SUU was one of seven universities to receive a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts to participate in the centennial celebration of Nikolais’ work.

All too often, SUU students don’t take advantage of the numerous free opportunities to watch great things happen, including the performing arts that take place on our campus.

As students, we pay a fee to various art departments to make these events free to attend, and yet in most cases, that is simply not utilized.

SUU, unlike other institutions, offers countless opportunities to its students.

It’s the students’ responsibility to act on those opportunities – to seize the day, and make the most of their educational experience at SUU.

A well-rounded education requires more than just the requirements to get a degree – the experiences outside of the classroom can help a student discover who they are, and what contributions they will make as they go forth into the world.

The University Journal Editorial Board encourages all students to make the most of their relatively short time at SUU – the experiences here will shape a lifetime.

The opinions expressed above are the collective perspective of the University Journal Editorial Board. The editorial board meets every Monday and Thursday at 5:30 p.m. in room 176C of the Sharwan Smith Center.
