Falls mar gymnastics team in loss at Iowa

T-Birds fall 195.300-194.475

Heading into the final rotation, the T-Bird gymnastics team closed within one tenth of the Iowa Hawkeye led, but after one fall was recorded on the beam, SUU dropped to Iowa 195.300-194.475 in Iowa City, Iowa Sunday afternoon. 

After the Hawkeyes started out strong on the vault and uneven bars. the T-Birds found themselves down 97.900-97.550.

However, SUU scored 48.975 on the floor, while the Hawkeyes scratched across 48.700 on beam to make it a 146.600-146.500 contest, in favor of Iowa.

The T-Birds then struggled with two falls in the final rotation, one of them was counted and it endagered any hopes of catching the Hawkeyes.

After senior Melissa Johnson and freshman Caitlin Kennedy scored 9.650 and 9.675, respectively; freshman Alyssa Click stepped up with a team-high 9.775 on the event.

However, sophomore Brooke Cersosimo fell twice on her routine and was scored 8.675.

Junior Ari Lamb followed Cersosimo and scored 9.750.

However, senior Elise Wheeler fell on the T-Birds' final routine of the afternoon and was scored 9.125. SUU finished the rotation with a team score of 47.975, while Iowa finished with a team score of 48.700 on the floor and won the head-to-head matchup.

The T-Birds will return to the gym floor on Friday at the University of Utah. Penn State and Oregon State will join SUU and the Red Rocks in the four-team competition.

Events will start at 7 p.m. Friday in Salt Lake City.
